The basic cable story
Drummer/programmer/video editor & producer/composer Zach Danziger began a life in New York City as a professional drummer as a teen, simultaneously balancing a busy life as a “child actor”. While many fans of “fusion” and ground breaking instrumental music identified Zach with legendary recordings and shows, he was building a world of theater and video production infused with his musical skills, with revolutionary projects like Boomish, Edit Bunker, Mister Barrington and Wednesday Night Titans.
On the opposite coast, keyboardist/ arranger/music producer Jeff Babko was also balancing music and comedy, touring with acts like Toto and Sheryl Crow but also on television for 22 years on Jimmy Kimmel Live. You can also catch him “on the road” still with fledgling comics Steve Martin & Martin Short.
Zach and Jeff bonded after appearances on the “I’d Hit That” podcasts and a brief tour with saxophonist Donny McCaslin, sharing a love for comedy and vintage GRP digital jazz.
From their humble beginnings at DTLA’s Blue Whale club as a band “Sock Belt” with Hagar Ben Ari, Davey Chegwidden and Josh Johnson, they began live scoring of B movies as a duo as “The Nine Fifteen O’Clock Movie.”
The Basic Cable show began in late 2023 at the Baked Potato jazz club as a means of showcasing New York’s public access masterpiece of yesteryear, “Stairway to Stardom.” They infuse other questionable vintage television and accompany and “repurpose” the content musically, wowing many audiences, and causing nausea in others.
They began their run at the El Portal Theatre in North Hollywood in 2025 with lighting & production guru Craig Housenick and audio/visual genius Daniel Sunshine (aka “Doug”).
